Packaging & Product Designer (Retail / Toy Industry) Contract Opportunity | Product & Packaging Development We are looking for an experienced Packaging & Product Designer to support the execution phase of a major Walmart private label program. This role will work closely with the Project Lead and Melbourne-based Designer, to deliver high-volume product and packaging asset s as style guides, packaging requirements, and factory specifications are finalized. This position is heavily focused on design execution, packaging rollout, and production-ready deliverables. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, experienced with retail packaging systems, and comfortable working within established brand guidelines while maintaining accuracy and consistency across a large product range. Project Overview Following the concept development phase, Walmart will provide official style guides, packaging standards, and branding documentation that will need to be rolled out across multiple product categories and packaging formats. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring product and packaging assets are developed efficiently, accurately, and in accordance with Walmart's private label standards. A significant volume of work is expected during the early costing and development stages, requiring someone who can work quickly without compromising quality. Key ResponsibilitiesPackaging Design & Production Execute Walmart private label style guides across multiple packaging formats and product categories Create, manage, and adapt packaging dielines for production and print requirements Apply typography, color systems, layouts, and branding elements in accordance with Walmart guidelines Ensure compliance with internal packaging requirements and structural specifications Design PDQ (Product Display Quarter) display units within Walmart-defined dimensional constraints Collaborate with the Project Lead to clarify packaging requirements and resolve design implementation questions Prepare print-ready and factory-ready packaging artwork files Product Design Execution Adapt approved product concepts to align with finalized Walmart style guides Develop and manage color specifications using Pantone references Refine product shapes, forms, and visual details across categories including preschool toys, puzzles, animal-themed products, and related SKUs Create factory-facing artwork, specification sheets, and production files Support material, finish, and decoration callouts where required Assist with early costing activities by preparing design assets and specifications for supplier review Required Skills & Experience Advanced proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign is highly desirable Strong understanding of retail packaging design, print production, and artwork preparation Hands-on experience creating and managing packaging dielines Excellent knowledge of color management and Pantone color specification Proven ability to work within established brand style guides and execute designs with high accuracy and consistency Strong attention to detail and production-focused design mindset Excellent English communication skills for collaboration with a remote team Preferred Qualifications Experience in the toy, preschool, children's products, or broader consumer goods industry Familiarity with Walmart, Target, or other major retail packaging standards Experience preparing factory-facing artwork, production files, and manufacturing specifications Understanding of packaging structures, materials, finishes, and print processes Experience supporting product development and costing phases Ability to manage large volumes of design work during peak project periods Team & Collaboration This role will work directly with the Project Lead, who is expected to join the project within the next two to four weeks. Together, both designers will share responsibility for the execution workload and support the rollout of product and packaging assets across the range. Given the anticipated volume of work, particularly during the early costing and development stages, we are seeking a designer who can quickly integrate into the team, work independently when required, and consistently deliver high-quality production-ready outputs under tight timelines. What Success Looks Like The ideal candidate combines strong packaging production expertise with product design execution skills. They understand how to translate brand guidelines into scalable packaging systems, prepare accurate factory-ready files, and support a fast-moving retail development process. Experience in preschool toys or consumer goods is highly advantageous, as is the ability to thrive in a collaborative, deadline-driven environment.
